How does hydropower cause pollution

Location and interests of hydropower

Basic information on the current situation in the use of hydropower

Hydropower is the world's most important renewable energy source. It makes a significant contribution to climate-friendly electricity generation and, thanks to its high availability, fits well into the existing electricity system. Without hydropower, it would be far more difficult to achieve national and European climate targets. Hydropower is the most cost-effective form of electricity generation from renewable energies. The use of hydropower and local nature conservation can be balanced with one another.

The need to promote hydropower arises as follows:

  • As a result of the liberalization of the electricity markets, the framework conditions for hydropower have noticeably deteriorated. Additional costs from public law tasks as well as charges from water usage fees are no longer covered by the market price.
  • In addition, the discussions about the relationship between economy and ecology are determined by the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive. This guideline unilaterally aims at the interests of aquatic ecology without adequately considering the contribution of hydropower to environmentally friendly electricity generation. In the practical implementation of the guideline, the goals of climate protection must be brought into line with the requirements of water protection.
  • The importance of hydropower as a renewable energy for a safe, inexpensive and sustainable energy supply must be made more aware of the general public, energy and environmental politicians and the authorities concerned in order to create a positive climate for the use of hydropower. In order to ensure continued economic operation and the expansion of hydropower, the framework conditions must be significantly improved.
