* sources of X-rays
* crystallization techniques
* symmetry (point groups, space groups), unit cell, Bravais lattice
* scattering of X-rays, atomic form factor, structure factor
* waves, diffraction of molecules and crystals, Fourier transform; electron density
* set-up of MX diffraction experiment and detectors
* Methods for solution of phase problem: molecular replacement, multiple isomorphous replacement, multi-wavelength anomalous dispersion
* density modification techniques
* structure refinement and analysis.
