Historical background

Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar (* 1542 - † 1605) is next to Ashoka one of the most legendary rulers in Indian history. From 1556 until his death he ruled the Indian Mughal Empire, which under his rule stretched from Kabul to Bengal. The empire was dominated by Muslims (most of the members of the Mughal family were Muslims), the official language was Persian.

Akbar's greatest achievement today is the integration of Muslims and Hindus. He granted more rights to the Hindu religious community, which had been hostile to the Mughals until then, and united the foreign cultures in his empire. He sealed this alliance of religions primarily through his politically motivated weddings with Hindu princesses in neighboring areas (all under the rule of the Rajputs, a Hindu ethnic group).

One of them was Hira Kunwari (* 1542 - † 1611), or Harkha-bai, who took the Muslim name Mariam uz Zamani after their marriage. She took a central role in Akbar's life and work. But especially about her, who is portrayed as Jodhaa in the film JODHAA AKBAR, there is little reliable to be found in the history books.

Before his film was released in India, Ashutosh Gowariker was confronted with violent allegations that his film would deviate too strongly from historical facts. The director suppresses the fact that Mughal Mogul Akbar had almost 200 wives, not just one. And this was also created far from scientific knowledge.

But the director never tired of emphasizing that JODHAA AKBAR is more about a thematic implementation than a factual historical film. In his reduction of the topic to the Muslim-Hindu love relationship, Ashutosh Gowariker makes a clear cultural and not a historical statement.
