When you pick up your iPhone X, XR, 11 or XS (Max) for the first time, you'll wonder how to unlock the device without a home button. No more buttons to press and no Touch ID that gives you access to the iPhone. Instead, a simple swipe will get you there.
At the bottom of the screen you will see a bar - the so-called "Home Indicator". Tap this area with one finger, swipe up over the display and you will land on the home screen of your iPhone. During the process, your identity is checked in the background at lightning speed via Face ID - Apple's 3D face recognition.

If you just want to take a look at the lock screen of your iPhone, all you need to do is tap the display. Alternatively, you can also press the “Side Button” (right outside) or simply bring the iPhone out of standby mode via “Activate when lifted”.
You can return to the home screen with the same gesture that you use to unlock your iPhone. Place your finger on the bar as described above and swipe up over the display.
