Why did Itachi smile before he died

What did Itachi say to Sasuke in Naruto Shippuden?

The Itachi and Sasuke dynamic was by far one of the most exciting aspects of Naruto moving on to Naruto Shippuden.

Not only was it about topics such as family, brotherhood, betrayal, hatred, power, and mystery, but treated them with delicacy to create one of the best plot twists ever.

Itachi's death did not fail to cause an emotional breakdown in the most stoic of people, and part of the reason can be traced back to his last words to Sasuke.

1. Short answer

Itachi's last words after their fight were, “Forgive me, Sasuke. There won't be a next time ”. This is an indication of their childhood days. As a child, Sasuke asked Itachi to help him train, but a busy Itachi dismissed him with, "Maybe next time."

2. What did Itachi say to Sasuke?

Itachi's last words to Sasuke were full of love and emotion - in contrast to the image that the anime had so far shown of him. It refers to the past known only to the brothers and well beyond the fourth wall.

Itachi vs. Sasuke - Itachi's last words

Itachi wears a friendly smile when he tells his brother -“Forgive me, Sasuke. There won't be a next time. " or after the manga translation,"Forgive me, Sasuke, this is the last time."

At the same time, Itachi stabs the forehead like before, then he dies. This is an ode to the countless times a young Sasuke approached Itachi to spend time with him through training. But a busy Itachi poked his forehead and said, "Forgive me, Sasuke, maybe next time."

This confirms the love Itachi has for his brother Sasuke over the complexities of their relationship, which has been highlighted throughout the show. This also implies that Itachi's questionable actions were based on compulsion and not born of hatred.

Worst of all, it alludes to the immense regret Itachi must have felt for not spending time with his brother, whom he loved. Even so, Itachi dies with a smile.

This causes confusion for Sasuke and the audience until Itachi's true circumstances are later revealed. The symbolism of Itachi poking Sasuke's forehead meant keeping Sasuke at a distance and away from the truth, as well as a token of affection and apology. However, this is not their final farewell.

3. During the third great ninja war - the final farewell

Sasuke may have no idea his brother's reality when he died as a human. However, thanks to the resuscitation jutsu, they can say goodbye for the last time and with better clarity.

Itachi seemed more open about his mistakes and can specifically tell his brother that he loves him before the resuscitation jutsu was stopped.

In the quote he says:

“If I had been open to you from the start and looked you in the eye and told you the truth, I wouldn't have to stand in front of you as a failure and tell you all this. This time I want to share this truth with you, you don't even have to forgive me, and no matter what you do from now on, I will always love you. "

Itachi insinuates that he loves Sasuke more than anything - even Konoha. This is in line with Sasuke's intention to destroy Konoha for what it did to his brother.

For the word love, Itachi uses "Aishiteru" in Japanese, which is considered the culmination of selfless and intense love. Itachi adds "always," which is a nod to his current form and the fact that he would love him beyond life and death.

Eventually, Itachi touches his forehead against Sasukes instead of poking her - closing the distance between the brothers that has been cultivated over the years.
