What are all iPhones in 2019

iPhone buying guide 2019: From iPhone 5s to XS Max

Apple itself currently offers seven different models - more than ever before. The iPhones 7 and 7 Plus were the top devices two years ago and are now being sold at a reduced price. The two now function as entry-level models, as the small iPhone SE (with the 5 / 5s case) has disappeared from Apple's stores. With 32 GB of memory, the iPhone 7 currently costs 519 euros.

Apple also continues to sell the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus from last year, starting at 679 euros. The iPhone X, on the other hand, had a short, albeit successful life and disappeared from Apple's range last fall. The latest variants, the iPhones XS and XS Max, replaced them in September 2018. In the best configuration with 512 GB of memory, the customer pays a hefty 1649 euros for the Max. The iPhone XR has been available since October 26th and costs 300 euros less than the XS with the same memory configuration.

In Germany, the iPhone SE and the iPhone X in particular are still on sale at retailers and supermarket chains. The variants 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6S and 6S Plus can mainly be found on eBay & Co. - used.

The iPhone 5s is available there from around 110 euros. With these immense price differences, it is important to take a close look and weigh up the functions and equipment details. But even old iPhone-hands can hardly recite all the functions of the individual generations from memory: When did Siri come, when did Touch ID and when 3D Touch? And which iPhone camera has how many megapixels? That's why we then compare all of the iPhones that are still up to date.

Similarities of the iPhones 5s to XS Max

All iPhones have multi-touch displays and sensors for acceleration, proximity, ambient light, gyro, compass and GPS. Each iPhone generation got a more powerful processor and an improved GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), which are combined in a SoC (System-on-Chip) together with other modules. However, performance has become less and less important since the iPhone 6s.

On older iPhones such as the 5s and 6, iOS 12 even runs a little faster than iOS 11, for example. You should therefore install the current operating system wherever possible. In addition, the new versions always plug security gaps. IOS 12 no longer runs on the iPhones 5 and 5c and their predecessors because it requires a 64-bit processor, but they only have a 32-bit processor.

The Siri voice assistant runs on all iPhones listed here, the screen content can be mirrored on an Apple TV via AirPlay Mirroring, a nano SIM card can be used and they have LTE. They all have a Lightning socket for connecting the power supply unit, USB cable and peripherals.

Earpods are part of the scope of delivery of every iPhone: Although the specially shaped plastic headphones do not seal the ear canal airtight, they deliver a surprisingly balanced sound. The switch on the right handset cable activates the microphone and controls playback and volume. Tip: It also triggers a photo when the camera app is open.

Used iPhones: Pay attention to the battery

If you own or plan to buy an older device, the battery should be one of your concerns. If it has been used for more than two years, it can be exhausted after a few hours.

For a long time, Apple installed batteries in the iPhones 6 to 7 Plus, the capacity of which decreased comparatively quickly. So that the affected iPhones do not simply switch off under full load or in the cold, Apple has secretly throttled their performance with a software update. That caught on, Apple apologized and launched a program for a cheaper battery replacement - but only for the calendar year 2018. The battery replacement now costs 49 euros for all older models from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone 8 Plus. For the battery replacement on iPhone X, XR, XS and XS Max, Apple charges 69 euros outside of the warranty.

As of iOS 11.3, each user can decide for himself whether or not the performance is throttled and the risk of a shutdown reduced when the battery is slow. The function can be found on affected devices in the battery settings under "Battery status". This battery management has now also been introduced on newer models such as the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

If the battery on your iPhone has already been replaced but not by a certified Apple technician, Apple may refuse to perform the repair. Here you only have to go to a free workshop. To change the battery yourself, you should be an accomplished electronics hobbyist.

This article is structured in such a way that we focus on the new features and changes for each model. If you get in the middle and can't find explanations of certain features of a device, please scroll back to the iPhone on which it was introduced.
