Is YouTube Music worth trying
Is YouTube Premium worth the money? 7 things to consider
In May 2018, Google renamed YouTube YouTube Red to YouTube Premium. The service itself hasn't changed much, yet still offers many of the same benefits. The big addition is a new music streaming service called YouTube Music Premium (not the same as Google Play Music).
But the question remains: Is YouTube Premium actually worth paying for?
The truth is, YouTube Premium is a mixed bag. It's really up to you and how much you value the features available. What you need to know to make an informed decision before subscribing to YouTube Premium.
1. It costs $ 12 a month
Oddly enough, YouTube Premium's $ 12 price tag suddenly feels too much and yet too little. And when you compare it to other subscription-based media services like Spotify, Amazon, and Netflix, the waters get even darker.
For example, Netflix is $ 8 a month, Amazon Prime is about $ 10 a month, and Spotify Premium is $ 10 a month. YouTube Premium costs more than any of these services, but does it offer as much as they do? Not really.
On the other hand, Twitch proves that thousands of users are volunteering $ 5 a month to individual channels All for an ad-free experience, the ability to chat while channels are only in subscriber mode, and other lightweight features with no noticeable benefits.
So, consider the $ 12 per month subscription cost when going through all of the YouTube Premium offerings. Only you can decide whether the price is reasonable. (Note that YouTube Premium comes with a 3-month free trial.)
2. No more ads on YouTube videos
The biggest selling point of YouTube Premium is that it removes ads from all videos on YouTube, regardless of whether those videos are YouTube Originals or not (more on that later). Unfortunately, the $ 12 price tag is really steep when ads can be blocked for free. (We don't accept that.)
In fact, the growth of ad blockers is one of the driving forces behind YouTube Premium. YouTube has long been known as the king of free videos, but these videos are expensive to host and stream. If the ads continue to be blocked, YouTube will have no choice but to pursue alternative revenue models.
We understand Ads are annoying, especially when you have to go through a minute-long ad just to watch a 30-second YouTube clip. Do you want to get rid of them? YouTube Premium lets you do this in a way that allows the service to stay in business.
3. Access to original YouTube originals
If you're perfectly happy watching ads on YouTube, there are a handful of other features that can justify the price of YouTube Premium for you. For example, the second big selling point is that some of the money goes to the production of original content.
As of this writing, the following shows are the best published YouTube originals:
- Cobra Kai: A comedy drama series based on the Karate Kid film series. It follows the reopening of the Cobra Kai Dojo and the troubles Johnny Lawrence faces without his famous mentor in the picture.
- Escape from the night: A murder mystery that follows a group of guests invited to a party and then sent back in time who then have to figure out how to keep pace with their lives.
- Pulse: A drama series (based on a novel of the same name) that involves a teenage girl who learns she can teleport. It's more than that, but let's leave it untouched.
- Lazer team: A full-length film that successfully blends teen comedy with superheroes. It's not the best thing to see this year, but it's decent enough that you don't feel like you wasted your time.
And there are many more to discover. In many series, you can watch the first episodes for free. So check out the YouTube Originals page and see if you notice anything.
Yes, these series and films are only available to those who have a YouTube Premium subscription. Are they on par with the original content from Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime? Not exactly, but it's clear that YouTube has a completely different audience in mind.
4. YouTube Premium Includes Google Play Music

However, YouTube Premium includes a free all-access subscription to Google Play Music that allows you to create custom radio stations, stream any song from the Google Play Music library on demand with no ads, and download songs for offline playback.
Note that an All Access subscription to Google Play Music costs $ 10 per month. So if you're already paying for an all-access plan, you can switch to YouTube Premium too. It costs pretty much the same, but you get so many additional features.
5. Extras for YouTube Music, Gaming and Kids
If you're not already using YouTube's YouTube mobile app, then you should give it a try. It takes all of the music available on YouTube and has it all at your fingertips so you can stream music anywhere.
The app is useful even as a free user, but it shines with a YouTube Premium account because of the additional features: no ads, music playing in the background even if you switch to another app, and downloading tracks and playlists for offline playback. 6. YouTube Premium does not affect regular users
What if you don't buy the entire YouTube Premium movement? How does this affect you as a regular viewer who's just wanting your daily dose of cat videos and all the other nonsense that YouTube delivers so well?
Well it won't. Nothing about regular YouTube changes.
You can think of YouTube Premium as an extension or addition to “regular” YouTube. YouTube will remain in its ad-supported form, but there will now be a separate VIP area where premium subscribers can watch originals.
7. YouTube Premium harms content creators

While nothing changes directly with regular YouTube, the existence of YouTube Originals can have an indirect but real impact on content creators who don't benefit from the revenues. The real problem, however, is that YouTube is trying to take control of something that has traditionally been generated by the user.
There are stories of popular YouTube creators being “forced” to participate in the YouTube Originals program (rejection meant removing their videos) while lesser known YouTube creators were not even informed about YouTube Originals.
It's clear that YouTube doesn't care about smaller channels that aren't popular enough to be Originals' partners. So what happens to them when the program boots up and they're in the dust? By supporting YouTube Premium (paid for YouTube Originals), you may be supporting the death of YouTube as we know it.
Should you sign up for YouTube Premium?
If ads don't bother you, you're not getting premium. If you're not interested in original content, you won't get Premium. If you don't use YouTube's mobile apps, you won't get Premium. If you don't hate the direction YouTube is going, don't endorse Premium.
YouTube Premium actually offers a lot for $ 12 a month, but it's only worth it if you take advantage of all of these features. The only situation where I can solidly say yes to YouTube Premium is when you're already paying for an all-access subscription to Google Play Music. Otherwise, it's a tough call, and personally I tend to say no. YouTube TV, on the other hand, may be the best cable replacement for cable cutters.
