The Gospel of Matthew chapter 23

Words against the scribes and the Pharisees

Mt 23.1Then Jesus turned to the people and his disciplesMt 23.2and said, The scribes and the Pharisees have sat on the throne of Moses.Mt 23,3So do and obey everything they tell you, but do not be guided by what they do; because they only talk but don't do what they say themselves.Mt 23.4They tie up heavy loads and place them on people's shoulders, but don't want to lift a finger themselves to carry the loads.Mt 23.5Everything they do, they only do so that people will see it: they make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their robes long,Mt 23.6at every feast they want to have the place of honor and the front seats in the synagogue,Mt 23.7and in the streets and squares they like to be greeted and called rabbi (master) by the people.Mt 23.8But you are not to be called rabbi; for only one is your master, but you are all brothers.Mt 23.9You are also not to call anyone your father on earth; for only one is your Father who is in heaven.Mt 23.10You should not be called teachers either; for only one is your teacher, Christ.Mt 23.11The greatest of you should be your servant.Mt 23.12For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humiliates himself will be exalted.Mt 23:13Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You close the kingdom of heaven to people. You yourself do not go in; but you do not let in those who want to go in either.Mt 23:14[]Mt 23.15Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel across land and sea to win a single person for your faith; and when he is won, you make him a son of hell who is twice as bad as you are.Mt 23:16Woe to you, you are blind leaders! You say, if anyone swears at the temple, it is not an oath; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is bound by his oath.Mt 23.17You blind fools! Which is more important: the gold or the temple that makes the gold holy?Mt 23:18You also say: If someone swears by the altar, it is not an oath; but whoever swears by the sacrifice that lies on the altar is bound by his oath.Mt 23:19You blind people! Which is more important: the sacrifice or the altar that makes the sacrifice holy?Mt 23.20Whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything that lies on it.Mt 23.21And whoever swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who lives in it.Mt 23,22And whoever swears by heaven, swears by God's throne and by him who sits on it.Mt 23.23Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You tithe mint, dill and caraway seeds and ignore the most important things in the law: justice, mercy and loyalty. You have to do one thing without leaving the other.Mt 23,24You are blind guides: you sieve out mosquitoes and swallow camels.Mt 23.25Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You keep cups and bowls clean on the outside, but on the inside they are full of what you have stolen from your excess.Mt 23.26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the mug, then it's clean on the outside as well.Mt 23,27Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like the graves that are painted white on the outside and look beautiful; but inside they are full of bones, filth, and rot.Mt 23.28So you also appear righteous to people from outside, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and disobedience to God's law.Mt 23.29Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You erect tombs for the Prophet and adorn the monuments of the righteousMt 23,30and says: If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been guilty of the death of the prophets like them.Mt 23.31With this you confirm yourself that you are the sons of the murderers of the prophets.Mt 23.32Only fill up the measure of your fathers!Mt 23.33You adders, you brood of snakes! How do you want to escape the judgment of hell?Mt 23.34Therefore hear: I am sending prophets, wise men and scribes to you; but you will kill some of them, even crucify them, whip others in your synagogues and persecute them from town to town.Mt 23.35So all the innocent blood that has been shed on earth will come upon you, from the blood of Abel, the righteous, to the blood of Zacharias, Barachias' son, whom you murdered in the courtyard between the temple and the altar.Mt 23.36Amen, I tell you: it will all come to this generation.Mt 23.37Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the prophets and stone the messengers sent to you. How often would I like to gather your children around me, like a hen takes her chicks under her wings; but you did not want to.Mt 23.38That is why your house (of God) is forsaken.Mt 23.39And I say to you: From now on you will not see me again until you cry: Blessed be he who comes in the name of the Lord!
