Normal nail polish constantly crumbles and fingernails always break off - but going to the nail salon is sometimes not possible and in the long run it is expensive and time-consuming anyway. The solution: We simply make our gel nails at home. You don't have to be a professional for that. With these quick instructions and a few tips, even beginners can create artificial fingernails.

Instructions for making gel nails yourself

Gel nails DIY: you need that

If you want to make gel nails at home, you first need the right equipment. These include nail files in various grain sizes, a UV lamp or an LED lamp for curing, cleaning fluid for nails, various gels (primer, builder gel, sealing gel), cellettes (no cotton pads; these lint too much), brushes and rosewood sticks.

If you want to not only model your nails, but also lengthen them, you also need special nail tips. And of course there are no limits to creativity: with nail stickers, rhinestones or nail tattoos, everyone can design their artificial fingernails the way they want.

Step 1: prepare your fingernail

First of all, the nails need to be shortened to the desired length and shape. Then carefully push back the cuticle with the rosewood stick and remove excess skin with a clipper.

Now you go with a buffer, i.e. an extremely fine-grained file) over the nails. Works without pressure, so as not to damage the nails when filing, but really only roughen them. As soon as the nails have a matt surface, they are sufficiently roughened. This step will make the gel stick better to the fingernail later.

Step 2: Extension with nail tips

If you want to not only shape your nails but also lengthen them, you can now apply the so-called nail tips. These are artificial nails made of acrylic. They are put on the fingernail with the help of a special glue. Important here: The artificial nail must be perfectly flush with the natural nail so that no gel runs underneath it later.

Also, make sure that no air bubbles form in the adhesive that could endanger the durability of the gel nails. And of course, any excess glue that has accidentally dripped onto the skin must be removed immediately.

Step 3: apply primer

Regardless of whether you are working with a nail extension or your own natural nails: In the next step, a primer is applied. This clear gel layer not only evens out unevenness, but also improves the adhesive properties of the subsequent nail gel.

Before the primer is applied, the nail must be free of grease and other residues (e.g. dust). Ideally, you should use a special nail cleanser to remove residue. Now distribute a thin primer layer evenly over the entire nail and, according to the manufacturer's instructions, let it dry in the curing lamp for a certain time.

Everything you need to know about gel nails

Step 4: apply gel layer

Now the actual gel layer comes on the nail. It is best to proceed in two steps. Two thin layers not only look even and opaque, they also last better. So first apply the first layer of gel with a brush. Proceed exactly as you know it from normal nail polish.

After the first layer has been applied and cured in the lamp, moisture residues usually form on the nail surface. This so-called sweat layer is removed with cellettes. And then the second gel layer can be applied and cured.

Step 5: the finish for perfect gel nails

Now the worst is done. It's all about the finish of the artificial nails. Check again whether the shape of the gel nails is even and correct it with a file if necessary. If the shape, length and thickness are perfect, it is sealed. To do this, free the artificial fingernails again from residues and dust, apply a final sealing gel, allow to harden, and the artificial nails are ready!

Then you can paint your gel nails as usual with nail polish in the desired color. Who would have thought that making gel nails yourself could be so easy and quick? Nobody!

Make gel nails yourself: general tips

+ Starter sets are suitable for beginners:Many online shops or nail salons sell gel nail sets that contain all the utensils you need to make gel nails yourself. Most of the time it is only a small sample size. But for the beginning and to test whether the nail modeling is fun, such sets are sufficient.

+ Practice first, then apply: The art of making artificial fingernails yourself is not to make the nails look too thick. If you apply too much gel, you can make the look look artificial. Ideally, you should therefore first practice on a nail model before attempting your own nails.

+ Fat protects the skin: When making gel nails yourself, it can happen that some gel drips next to it. To protect the skin, it is best to coat it with a thin layer of fat (e.g. Vaseline) beforehand.

+ Proceed nail by nail: Anyone who is not yet used to applying gel is best devoted to each hand and nail individually. This prevents the gel layer from running and looking uneven if you wait too long for the artificial nails to harden.

+ Remove gel: If you still have old gel on your nails, you can either remove it with a special milling device, as the professionals do, or use a coarse nail file to remove the gel layer. In order not to accidentally proceed too roughly, files are better suited for beginners. Although this method takes longer, it is gentler. Important: The closer you get to the natural nail, the finer the file should be.
