Maximilian Kleber and the Dallas Mavericks have taken a big step towards direct qualification for the play-offs. The Texans prevailed on Wednesday (local time) with 125: 107 against the weakened New Orleans Pelicans. A win from the remaining two games is enough for them to get the ticket for the final round.

Luka Doncic played big against the Pelicans. The Slovenian had had a weaker performance the day before, but at home against New Orleans he reported back with 33 points. Kleber came off the bench and contributed five points.

The Los Angeles Lakers lurk right behind the Mavericks. Without the top performers LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Dennis Schröder (quarantine), the champions struggled to a 124:122 home win against the Houston Rockets, the bottom of the west. Before the game started, the Lakers unveiled their pre-season title banner.

The still ailing James took the opportunity to announce his fight: "This moment is for you, our fans. Let's move on. The path to defending the title begins in less than a week." In order to qualify directly for the play-offs, the Lakers need mistakes from the competition. Otherwise they have to take the detour via the so-called play-in tournament, in which the teams in places seven to ten of each conference take part.

In the east, the Washington Wizards could contest this pre-qualification. However, the club from the capital suffered a setback with the 116: 120 at the Atlanta Hawks. National player Isaac Bonga did not play again, Isaiah Hartenstein was also missing in the 102: 94 victory of the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Boston Celtics.
