Do hormones really affect my attitudes
Hormonal imbalances in women & men
What is a hormonal disorder?
In order to answer this question, one must first look what a hormone is, or which substances are part of this group. The word hormone comes from the Greek ( horman - drive ) and describes a group of substances in the organism that regulate elementary processes such as metabolism or growth. There are very many, different hormones and also very many places in the body where they are released. All hormones are integrated into certain control circuits, form a complex system and are thus controlled in terms of quantity and effect.
However, this system is also prone to failure and can react very sensitively. One can speak of a hormone disorder if, for whatever reason, this system, with its control loops, no longer works without problems, that is, when people experience symptoms.
The best-known hormones are certainly the sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone), which are so named because they have a strong influence on the libido and the female cycle, among other things. Other relatively well-known and influential hormones are cortisol, from the adrenal gland, the hormones of the thyroid gland or insulin, from the pancreas, which regulates the blood sugar level.
Also diabetes or one Thyroid disease can be understood as a hormonal disorder. Thus it becomes clear that it is not the one There is a hormonal disorder and the term covers a wide field.
Which diseases lead to disorders of the hormonal balance?
Just as there is no such thing as one hormonal disorder, there is also no such thing as a disease that leads to a hormonal disorder. In general, the endocrine system can react strongly to stress or be influenced by long-term medication intake (for example, by cortisone). Various pollutants from our environment can also influence our hormonal system.
Furthermore, tumor diseases can lead to hormonal problems. In this way, some tumor tissue can produce hormone autonomously and thus mess up the system. Of course, every disease of a hormone-producing organ is also associated with the risk of a hormone disorder. Here would be Hyperthyroidism or hypofunction as well as the adrenal cortex (insufficiency) as prominent examples.
What symptoms are caused by hormonal imbalances?
The symptoms caused by a hormonal disorder can vary widely, depending on the underlying problem. However, relatively unspecific symptoms are often suspicious, such as:
Skin and hair can also change (e.g. acne or Hair loss ). Especially with problems of the so-called sex hormones, loss of libido, menstrual cramps or cycle irregularities can occur.
How is a hormonal disorder treated?
Here, too, it is difficult to make a general statement. In most cases, however, drug therapy (for example in the form of hormone replacement therapy) is the method of choice. If there is a hormone-producing tumor, it is usually removed surgically. In the event of stress or pollution, attempts are of course also made to avoid them.
