Whenever you need to tell your Arduino to change the state of a pin (e.g. to turn on the lights) the user needs to press a physical button or use a sensor. Relying on a human finger press or something like that is fine for many projects, but what if you just want to set up your circuit and access it?

One of the advantages of USB is that it doesn't require an internet or bluetooth connection to operate.

The app is a fully featured IDE that allows you to code on your phone, upload sketches previously saved in your Dropbox or Google Drive, and make sketches on the go.

The advantages of this app are obvious. Having an IDE on hand is the perfect thing for making quick changes in the field. Plugging in an Android device is less of a hassle than balancing a laptop on hand!

One obvious downside is that entering code on your device may not be particularly convenient, especially if it's a smartphone. This is only a minor problem when compared to the convenience of an ultra-portable way of programming the board without an internet connection.

This is also an inexpensive way to learn the basics of Arduino. 2. Arduino bluetooth controller

Next on our list is the aptly named Arduino Bluetooth Controller App. This app is less about programming an Arduino while it is running, and more about triggering changes in the uploaded sketch. The app sends data to your board via Bluetooth, so you can send serial data with the push of a button. You need one Bluetooth module for your board, even though the HC-06 The module is widely available and is available for just $ 3 at the time of writing.

Another app is recommended in the video above, although some users report that it doesn't work on modern smartphones. The Arduino Bluetooth controller doesn't seem to have this problem. It's worth noting that the app is downloaded in English rather than Italian as indicated in the Play Store images!

3. Blynk

We have already looked into creating projects with Blynk and found this to be an excellent service. Thanks to its flexibility and simplicity, events on your board can be triggered intuitively. Blynk needs an internet connection as it uses its own server. You can use either Wi-Fi or cellular data to access Blynk, which makes it ideal for use with smartphones.

One of the strengths of Blynk is the variety of ways you can connect a device. In addition to support for almost any development board, you can wirelessly connect to the server via ethernet or even connect a computer via USB. The service is well documented and the intuitive use makes it easy to assemble custom controls for your project. The Blynk library for the Arduino IDE takes care of all communication.

If you're the type of person who wants to start your coffee maker from their phone before they get up in the morning, then this one is for you!

Blynk isn't the only service in this space, neither is the highly customizable and the practically limitless but devilishly difficult OpenHAB. Of the three, Blynk is certainly the fastest up and running, despite getting to know OpenHAB. 5. Turn your Arduino into a server

Another way to communicate with your board is to turn it into a small server. This has the advantage that it opens up the possibility of communicating with the board from anything that can navigate to an IP address or make a web request.

6. Infrared control

Are you looking for a true wildcard way to talk to your Arduino? Would you like to take full advantage of MacGyver? Then get one out Infrared (IR) receiver from an old stereo or VHS player and use this to talk to your Arduino board!

This method requires an IR blaster to be installed on your Android device. There are plenty of apps out there to take advantage of this feature, although the Mi Remote controller is free and works with many other home appliances.

Once you've installed the app you need to create a simple circuit to “sniff” IR signals. This IR remote will guide you through building the circuit.

While this tutorial uses an old remote control, the process for using an IR beam from Android devices is exactly the same. The availability of the parts makes it a great entry-level project.

This method only works within line of sight. However, this is the cheapest way to wirelessly communicate with your board. Even if you can't clean the parts for it, an IR receiver costs less than a dollar. For a static device like a set of ceiling mounted LED strips, this could be the perfect solution to a simple problem.
